The Canterbury Barton Ward LD candidate is the psephologist & former Liberal Party President (pre-merger) Michael Steed.

Known for being the bearded Liberal on BBC election programmes in the 1970s. I'd heard he had health problems but evidently he got better.

Not to be confused of course with Alan Watson (who is now Lord Watson), isn't it interesting that people who follow elections become Lib Dems?

I don't think that anyone would confuse Michael Steed with Lord Watson of Richmond (who is nominally My Noble Friend!)

Spent a good chunk of today in Wigan West. Labour are distributing a newsletter which is reasonably designed but very odd in content. No sign of any parties other than Labour or Conservative.

It is truthful and honest? That would be very odd...

Haha... well actually it was a reasonably well-put-together leaflet but it read like a ward newsletter, there were only a handful of references to the by-election and they looked like they'd been added as an afterthought.

Like Iain I was in Wigan last weekend, its hard to say how its going to go, could be quite close.

I took a surprisingly large amount of enjoyment out of the fact that the Tory Candidate is called John Cartwright (aka John Loony).

Tony Greaves

TBH, I'm a little confused as to why it was feared that there might be confusion!!!

Not to be confused with Peter Marsh who was someone I went to school with.
